Final illustration: Ideas Development Getting started I decided to base this assignment work around a friend's band, Ivy Fire.  Rather than make something fictional for this assignment, I felt would be much better to use a real band who do real performances.  I also think it is quite important that I can ask them questions, and then gauge their reaction to the final illustration at the end of the assignment. They describe the style of their music as being "quite rocky with funk". The poster is for a performance at an Eastbourne town centre pub. Visual Research I collected together a wide variety of different gig posters onto a Pinterest board.  I was struck by the incredible diversity of the illustrations and artwork. I'd say that this particular field of illustration seems particularly alive, vibrant and exciting. Final illustrations: Ideas development: Initial thoughts: Upon reading the assignment it seemed quite a challenging piece of work. I immediately began to visualise so many different types of illustration: from watercolours of fruit and veg, through to all digital artwork.  This work could be taken into so many different directions and styles.  However, the warning in the handbook was very important for me to note, "... be especially conscious of  the way you use colour ... and surface marks – poor choices  can result in food looking mouldy, battered, and ultimately unappetising. ". Whatever, I chose to do, it must be produced in a media that makes for visually appealing food items. The choice of media and drawing surface would make-or-break this piece of work.  I immediately began to think about the bright colours I could achieve with acrylic paints or coloured pencils. Final artwork Summary  I set out to create an image that could visually represent aspects of myself.  I was intrigued by the possibilities of visual storytelling and the use of typography in the artwork.  And in my final image, I incorporated text to convey direct messages about identity and one's sense of self.   Further, I conceived of this image as primarily showing a 'striking' self-portrait.  Again, my intention has been realised in the final illustration. Producing this artwork has been an very satisfying and enjoyable process.  In contrast to my assignment/exercise experiences during the Drawing 1 module, doing this first assignment on Illustration 1 has had a very different creative flavour.  Certainly it has exercised my visual problem-solving and allowed me to be a lot more open in my creativity.
